I guess that I should put my email address in here in case someone wants to contact me about the reunion. For those of you back in the states, Danny and I would like you to know that the beer (bier) and wine (wein) are as good as they ever were. The bratwurst is still fattening and the pomme frits are delicious. Come and join us. mikelavka@yahoo.com

It was nice to hear from some of the alumni of BRAVO BTRY LANDAU.I have a lot of memories.Even though I had some adjustments to make in my life when I was there.I had just turned 18 and had a lot of growing up to do but as some one said 1st Sgt Johnny L. Jones was a life saver and my section chief Ssgt Chandler was one of my biggest supporters when I got in trouble, which seemed to be often.Lets hear from some 16c 20's

Great site!!! I was stationed in Landau from April, 66 until August 68. I was in the Launch Control Trailer down range.. Went to White Sands on SNAP in April, 67. I'll have to dig out some of my old pictures to see if we can update the site to what it looked like when it was a Nike Hercules site. If any one remembers me I'd love to hear from you...

B/2/56 became a family to me. I was there February/1966 thru May/1968 (just 18yrs. old when I arrived). I miss those men I served with, the base and Landau. 1st Sgt. Jones kept it all together and got plenty of us out of trouble downtown too! The motor pool had a reputation of hung-over screw ups, but the IFC and Launch Area crews proved excellence as they were a part of the first in NATO to score 100% SNAP. But the motor pool must have been darn good too, we always had time to paint rocks and dig that goldfish pool in front of the dining room. I wonder if it's still there?

I was a 16C at C/2/56 from Oct 71-May74 and HHB/2/56 from May74-Mar 75. I was in the T1 the last 10 months I was in 2/56, and we trained B/2/56 for ASP in 74. I worked with CWO4 "Pete" Wimmersberg on the ASP training team, and taught ACQ. checks. Cpt. Lynn (or was it Lund, I can't remember) was my Plt. Leader at C Btry.

I see others here from HHB instead of B Battery so i am saying Hi to you all. I was in Pirmasens in 1972 and 1973. It was so interesting to see the 2001 pics of the HHB building and comparing that to my old pics of the building from 1972. Anyone from that time period, drop me a line. I wish we had the internet back then!!

Thanks for the invite Danny! Nice site. I was stationed at HHB 108th Air Defense Artillery in Kaiserslautern, Germany from 1978-1980 at Kleber Kaserne. Our batteries were 2/60, 2/62 & 6/56. Our higher headquarters was 32nd AADCOM in Darmstadt Germany.

I have a lot of fond memories of K-Town and miss it sometimes.

After PCS'ing from K-Town I was send to Ft Myer, VA and stationed in Washington, DC at the MDW F&AO down near the Potomic River.

I have been out of the service since 1983. I got out as an E-5. Sometimes I wish I'd stayed in. It was too much fun even though I didn't think so at the time.

I recently started up websites for HHB 108th ADA, 45th Finance (had friends there in Germany), and DC on military.com. If anyone is interested in looking, email me and I'll send the link. I need to start a site on 50megs.com because as far as I can see it's too hard to find a site on military.com and you can only download one pic. Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing :)

At any rate, those were the good old days.

I was at B Btry 2/56 from 79 to 83 enjoyed every minute of it,and competeing against the germany during there organization sport day, and Bravo did very well. I often look at alot of the awards that I and the other soliders recevied during those sport days. Some of the guyes that were at Bravo are not with us any more may god rest their soul. I retired as a CSM from Ft Polk LA in 96 and Iam working for the Fed. Does anyone Know What ever happend to Kenneith Ellis/and what about the guyes that made up the drill team that bravo had, I know one of the guyes last name was Rose, when I find the news clipping of those soldiers, and a picture from one of those sport days I'll try to send in to DC to see if he can put it in the book. So it is time for me to end/ hope we can make the get- together in 2003, catch you'al later.

Hi Danny;

Don't know if you remember me but when you reported to the unit in the summer of 1974 I was the IFC Platoon leader---you know, the guy that didn't drive. Good to see that you and Mike are working hard to keep this very important chapter of Air Defense history alive. After I left Germany in 1977 I never did return to that part of the world, but I did remain in the Army, retiring in 1993. I did serve a number of times with SFC Clifton Wilson and met SFC Oscar Garcia as a Drill Sgt at Fort Bliss. By the way when I got married and moved out to the east side in El Paso guess who moved in a block away-- thats right William O Smith--remember him? What ever happen to Morgan, Longoria, Branch, Sapienza, Hodnett, Gunn, Pop, and so forth? I will look through my photo albums and see what I can do to provide you some assistance in keeping this site up and running. Again, great to see that all is well with you.

I was very excited to find the images of Pirmasens on your site. I was a dependent who lived in Pirmasens from 1971 until 1977. My dad was enlisted worked in mess and then USMCA for Frontier, NCO and Officers clubs. We returned to Germany in 1978 and I returned to my old highschool in Zweibruecken graduating in 1979. I remember working summer hire in one of the buildings (coming from the housing area side) that had two missles in front of it. There was AYA cheerleading and listen to the jukebox at the snackbar! Mass in the chapel where my younger brothers served as altar boys.

Thanks for posting the images, it was really neat to see Pirmasens again and it brought back a lot of fond memories! Evelyn Furtado

One of my fellow former tower rats tracked me down recently and told me about this site. This is great!!! I was an MP at B btry from 79 to early 81. My first duty station.

I remember in basic, one of the new DIs was receiving an award in front of the entire training company. When we asked "Top" what this award was for he told us that this SSG was being recognizes for being a "Crazy, Gung-Ho Super Trooper" at his last duty station. He added that it was the last place on Earth any of us would want to go. As luck would have it he was referring to B btry 2nd/56th ADA and after completing AIT I was sent as that young DIs replacement.

After all was said and done I have to say that "Top" was wrong. I made some good friends. Had some good times and have memories to last a lifetime. To all my former friends and comrades, I wish you well&ldots;.

My God how a website like this brings back the memories, (both good and bad! From Sept '79 'til Feb'80 I called B-2/56 my home. From the 24 hours on/off duty, walking the fence line during the foggy, rainy nights to 1SG Cobb shouting at the LTs, "I don't care what rank you are, get a ****ing hair cut!" and fights with the FROGS (French) wanna-be soldiers. Hell they spent half their time in the mock village, retreating! Spent the first year sitting in a tower, and when we were short of MP NCOs (only SSG Poe, SGT Cribbs still there) I was made SOG and Scott Hickman was the COR. Re-enlisted on Tower 2 during a TAC EVAL in Nov '79! Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

I remember guys getting busted just so they didn't have to pull guard duty ,we were short handed so alot of the guy's got screwed ,when they should have been off duty they had to work. Went back in 1997 or 98 for a vacation in europe and i took my family to good ole Landau we went up the hill and lo and behold the glider airport was still there but the only thing left of (downrange) was the fencing , i could still see the cement slab for what was then the messhall, across from the assembly building . I stood in front of the fence with my vidio camera going, my family wouldn't even get out of the car. Boy that was an eerie feeling standing there. To Many memories to list but anyway... I hope that you all have a Happy Thanksgiving. Mike Lavka

Danny, Thanks for e-mailing. Sorry I missed your phone call. I have some great memories of being stationed there from 1974 to 1976. I remember the time we had to go down and guard the launching area. It was a foggy night, and we were walking between the towers. We saw Capt. Grover walking towards us, he asked us why we didn't challenge him. I have never forgotten your response. You told him "there are only two things that walk like that, you and Godzilla". I am going to do my best to make the reunion.

Hi!, Danny: This is a terrific site! It brought me back in time to my first permanent duty station that I truly enjoyed. I'm especially glad to finally regain contact with you and others that I have lost communication with over the years. I retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant on October 1, 2001, and was proud to have served with many fine people during my tenure. We now live in the Middle Tennessee/Kentucky area. I can't make any commitments to the reunion at this time, but in the meantime, those who want to contact me can do so at the e-mail address provided herein. Until next time...take care.

Greetings to all former B Battery troopers! My first assignment in the Army was serving as the Security Platoon Leader at Bravo from Jan. '81 until April '83. My service at Bravo was meaningful and a great foundation for my Army career. I learned a tremendous amount about soldeirs, NCOs and the Army culture in general during my years of service at Bravo that has served me well these past 22 years. I remain on active duty and am a promotable LTC currently attending the National War College. I'm on the downward slide of a mediocre Army career, but will always look fondly on my days at Bravo. We had a great team and I'm forever grateful and indebted to the superb officers and NCOs we had in the unit back then (e.g. LT Rigsbee, LT Derr, CW3 Aplin, 1SG Ashbury, SFC Pickney, SSG Grace, SSG Lee, SSG Hermann, etc.)who taught me early how to balance accomplishing the mission with taking care of the troops and other practical lessons on leadership that I've never forgotten. We also found a way, despite all our long hours, to have a lot of fun!

Presuming I'm anywhere near the metropolitan Washington area in September '03, I plan to attend the reunion and hope to see as many of you as possible. In the meantime, take care of yourselves. If you remember me, please feel free to communicate with me. So long for now!

What a trip to see this site! I enjoyed my time at B Btry except for the 24 on/24 off without any days off. At least we stemmed the tide of communist aggression from sweeping Landau... So where do I get the T-Shirt? Forgot to add, I was a guest there from aug 74 til Oct '75. Shared an apartment above the Moulin Rouge, downtown, the last year as they said there was overcrowding in the barracks. They sure made the all volunteer Army tough.

Greetings Comrades. [fellow missileman that is] I am already in the guest book. But, I stopped by to see if maybe another of my eon/genre [that's DIE-KNOW-CZAR my boy] had been here to leave a note. NONE! Well............? (some have gone to the great beyond, after all, I am 69-10/12th's myself)
Perhaps I'll devote this opportunity, for one of the tales from "The TWO." At a time after my arrival, when CWO Phillips decided to turn me loose, I had a good association with one SP/4 Peters, 24U. This young man lived in a cave downtown Landau and was a stereophile extroadinaire with a thing for AR Speakers. What a sound system he had. And, he introduced me to ABC Records Surround Sound. Great. But, that is not the gist of this tale. Seeing that he was expert at electronics, was worthy of note. We did not have a flight responder. No one in the entire 32nd AADCOM had an operational Responder. [you know, that's the thing that the MTR is suppossed to lock on to, so the unit can do real crew drills] So I asked Pete one day if he felt he could resolve our own Responder problem, if, I turned him loose, and made damn sure, that he got all of the help that he needed. "Yeah Chief, I can do that!"
Zo......, as we were heading into deep 6 maintenance, I passed the word that the LCT [Launcher Control Trailer] would be down, as we [Assembly] were doing our own deep maintenance. Great! That is until, at the breakfast officer's table, 1/LT Meyers [Lchr Plt Ldr] opened up his big mouth with the declaration, "Mister Reder...., Specialist Peters has the Launcher Control Trailer all over the trailer, and the ground outside........., are you [meaning me, as in I am responsible] going to be able to get all that electronic stuff back together, before we come back up to status? Folks, whether we got it back together or not, did not make a difference at all, in firing a War Reserve Missile at a target. Actually [now youse guys knows dis, RIGHT] the LCT is not needed to fire a tactical missile in a state of "BATTLE STATIONS." I directed my answer to the BCO, "There is no problem sir. Specialist Peters is doing just fine. I am constantly aware of his progress, and, of the assistance he is being given by all concerned, to assure the success of this operation. After all, no one in this command has an operational Responder, and this will be a first." I also told our battery officers to keep their mouths shut. Cause after Pete got it all back together, we did'nt want every Tom, Dick, and Harry, to be using our operational Flight Responder. Well, as you might guess, Pete got everything [with help from all sectors] back together.
When the responder was put on line, I explicitedly told the officer staff, NOT TO BRAG, of our accomplishment...."KEEP YOUR MOUTHS SHUT!" Now, you know what happened....., right! Yeah @#$$$$%%^&*(+, first thing I know, here comes some ape with a batallion signed order to turn over our responder to a duffass, cause they need to run a drill. GREAT??????
Well, Pete did a commendable job, for which he was rewarded [I think]. We never saw our Flight Responder again. And after an incident in "A Section," I was assigned to A Battery at Germershiem Army Depot.
Oh, the Assistant Assembly Sergeant was SSG Vernon Fowler. And he is another story unto itself. As well is Lt. Meyer, who, got a ride with me one day in my family Corvair Corsa Turbo 180.
But any good story, cannot have an ending. So, understanding that, I'll leave you here, in "CYBERSPACE." Until the next time.

Hello Danny Carter:

GREAT WEB SITE!!!

Although I did not serve in your Artillery Unit, I did become a Field Artillery Section Chief (13B40) via Ft. Sill, OK and the 2nd Inf. Division at Camp Casey Korea, in the early 1970's.
Danny, it is so good to hear that you are doing so well. It has been approximately 35 years, since I last saw you in High School.
I am currently residing in Durham, NC, and have been here, for a number of years. Perhaps, sometime in the future, we will be able to get up with each other, and talk about old times, while growing up in Harlowe, NC (smile).
I wish you and your family the very best of Luck, in everything that you do.
Please Take Care and may God Bless you!

My first assignment after being appointed IFC Maintenance Warrant in Jan 1973 was to Bravo Battery at Landau. Of course, everyone assumed that the new "WOJG" knew nothing, but I hope I changed their opinions. I also served about 6 weeks at Alpha 2/56 after they lost both Warrants in short order. One of my extra duties at Bravo was as the German & French liaison officer. I left 2/56 to go to 3/71, where my wife's family lived. I stayed in German from June 1972 till Feb 1978, serving in four different Batteries of 3/71 and 2/56 during that time.
